New Orleans-Host to All-Stars on and off the court

New Orleans, Feb. 16, 2008-Best known for its Mardis Gras and party atmosphere, New Orleans served host to another event during the NBA All-Star Weekend. Celebrating its 3rd year, the annual All-Star Breakfast honored NBA great Allan Houston and Orlando Magic owner Rich DeVos.

DSC_1256t.jpgBest known for his sharp shooting abilities on the court with the Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks, Allan Houston was recognized for his abilities off the court with another accolade Saturday. Presented with the Bobby Jones Award, Houston was acknowledged for the life he leads in his home, community and the basDSC_1250t.jpgketball world. The award is annually given to recognize the NBA player (past or present) whose life and lifestyle embody faith, courage, character, eternal impact and integrity. Houston is an avid promoter of the Boys and Girls Club and an active advocate of ongoing education through the various scholarships he has helped comprised. Other finalists include: AC Green and David Robinson.

Named after its namesake, the award honors the NBA executive whose life and lifestyle impact and benefit the community both on and off the court. DeVos has given extensively to educational, medical, and Christian institutes. Other finalists for this award include: Dallas Maverick’s Coach Avery Johnson and Orlando Magic executive Pat Williams.

Both awards are determined by a nominating committee composed of basketball greats: Jerry Colangelo, Bobby Jones, Ernie Johnson and Clark Kellogg.

DSC_1260t.jpgThe award recipients, as noted by NBA analyst Ernie Johnson, learned to “Trust God Period.” Regardless of what life has thrown their way, in an exemplary fashion, both have personally learned not only trust God regardless of their personal circumstances but have learned in a very real way to impact others as a result.

The All-Star Breakfast is an Athletes in Action Sports Legend Series event.
